Meet the Makers: Tamela Meyer

One of the major selling points for Foamnasium has always been that we cover each piece with high quality vinyl covers. What you may not know is that these covers are not mass produced. Instead, each cover is sewn by hand, by one of the experienced members of our sewing department. In this installment of the Meet the Makers series, we’re going to introduce you to one of our skilled seamstresses, Tamela Meyer. She’ll give you a peak behind the scenes at what goes into making Foamnasium the fun, colorful toy your children enjoy on a daily basis.

Without further ado, it gives us great pleasure to introduce you to Tamela!

Alright, first things first. What is your name?

Tamela Meyer

Where are you from?

I am from Indianapolis, IN. Lived here my entire life!

What is your role here at Foamnasium?

Hmm, that’s a hard question right now! I am a seamstress. Since our boss left, I have taken on her position temporarily. Basically, I route and direct the sewers, and sew, and have as much fun as possible!

Sounds like it! So how long have you been sewing?

Well, I started here four years ago and Connie – our previous boss – taught me how to sew. I had never sewn before that.

Very cool. That sounds like something I would like to do, but would be very bad at doing.

You’d be surprised! Some people think they are, it’s just a matter of getting used to the machines.

So, along those lines, what do you think is the most difficult Foamnasium piece to sew?

That would have to be one of the pieces that we are actually deleting from our inventory. It’s called a pullout sofa and it takes normally 1.5 hours – 2 hours to make. But I always thought it was a pretty spectacular item when it was done. While it takes a long time, it’s pretty rewarding when it’s done.

So, what do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I like to go do things with my grandchildren. I also sew when I’m not working – for my own self –I make clothes and furniture for American Girl dolls. So, that’s fun. And I’m a gamer!

Really?

Not on the computer, I’m a board gamer. We play games every Saturday night and there’s anywhere from 6-16 people. We play board games and we try to play the really hard ones the most difficult ones.

Favorite board game?

I would say – I never can remember the name of it – I think it’s Caverna? Yes, Caverna. It’s a farm building kind of game and it’s pretty fun.

Ok, final question, if you could switch places with one person for a day, who would it be and why?

I would probably switch places with our Plant Manager. Because I only see the plant from the sewing side and the stuffing and shipping side as well. But I’d really like to see what the whole operation does. In fact, I even dressed up as him for Halloween one year and went around the plant “ordering people around”. It was really fun!

People like Tamela are what make Foamnasium great! And her’s is only a fraction of the story. We can’t wait to introduce you to all the awesome people that make up the Foamnasium team!
